At the end of the dialogue, the participants were asked to talk about their vision for Toppan beyond TOPPAN Business Action for SDGs, in 2030 or even further in the future, and about their message for society as a whole and for young people.
Creating solutions aligned with society and the future
Environment Sub-working Group Leader
Senior General Manager, Marketing Strategy Department, Packaging Solutions Subdivision, Living & Industry Division
Toppan takes the form of a B-to-B company, but our work is closely aligned with society and client companies, and we provide diverse solutions to social issues. For example, in packaging there are countless companies that simply make boxes or pouches, but Toppan's business is not that. Packages are no longer needed after they are used, but Toppan's value is that we pursue technologies and products that mean that even after we throw packaging away, it doesn't pollute the planet or put a burden on the environment. This is not limited to the environment. Education and culture are also similar. Rather than being a company that just provides what somebody asks us to make, I want us to provide real solutions that consider society and the future.
Targeting a future in which people, communities, businesses, and the SDGs successfully co-exist
Communities Sub-working Group Leader
Head of Business Architecture Center, DX Design Division
I think it's important that individual satisfaction, the interests of companies, the interests of customers, and the SDG targets for the world are all achieved naturally and effortlessly. For example, we can say there is a big problem with businesses where the interests of the company are at odds with impact on the environment. Companies in Europe are often recognized as being progressive when it comes to the SDGs, but I think this is because economic profit and the political objective to enhance influence in the world are achieved without contradicting things like religious beliefs.
Working hard for yourself benefits the community. Working hard for your department benefits the company and then benefits other companies, customers, and the planet. If we are able to design that kind of business, we will always be able to do things in the proper way without falling into the trap of SDG-washing. That is the kind of company I want Toppan to be.
Responding flexibly to change and shaping a future that embraces diverse values
People Sub-working Group Leader
Senior General Manager, Experience Design Department, Marketing Subdivision, Information & Communication Division
Honestly speaking, I don't know what society and Toppan will be like in 10 years time. The Internet changed society in an instant, and the world has changed dramatically in just the last 10 years. Add in the unforeseen impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and I think it would be amazing to be able to talk about what the world should be like 10 years in the future.
However, one thing I can say is that however society changes, if Toppan accepts it, and the people working at Toppan know what they want to do, it is a company that can change in that way. Therefore, I think that Toppan in 10 years time is something that we should shape together and something that we should create with the young people who will join the company from here on.
Valuing every person's dreams and aspirations and achieving larger scale and higher quality
General Manager, Development Strategy, Technology Innovation Center, Business Development Division
I am certain that Toppan has the foundation to take individuals' aspirations and dreams and make them a reality at a larger scale and with higher quality. Millennials and Generation Z are very conscious of climate change and a circular economy, and many of them are engaged in marine waste cleanup and ethical consumption as individuals. If people like that join Toppan, it should be possible to leverage Toppan's assets and work with customers and people of the same mind inside and outside the company to drive activities on a bigger scale and involving more diverse people than ever before.
I want Toppan to be a company where the aspirations of individuals become targets for the company and that leads to a better society.
Giving shape to hope with stakeholders beyond 2030
General Manager, Brand Promotion Department, Marketing Subdivision, Information & Communication Division
This dialogue has been about Toppan's approach to the SDGs, but I am involved in the SDG-related statements and target setting of various companies. We set SDG targets while holding workshops with the young employees who will play central roles at those companies in 10 years time. If we think about the future in 10 years time, there is some element of anxiety, but targets set by young employees are bold and really are targets to give form to people's hopes. I want Toppan to be an entity that continues to give shape to hope with stakeholders in 2030 and beyond.
